We are on the beautiful Andaman islands far away from the Indian mainland and it’s not so sunny this time around, the monsoon is here and it’s the best time for a drive around the island if you ask me. This because there is nobody in sight and only a handful of journalists driving the very first Nissans to enter this part of the world. It’s the new Sunny that is slated for launch next month, the Japanese manufacturer has updated their entry sedan and it promises to offer even more this time.
2014 Nissan Sunny (10)
The Sunny gets lots of chrome on the grille and even around the fog lamps
The Sunny is a unique offering, the car is only slightly more expensive than the best selling compact sedans but offers much more boot space and rear knee-room, not to forget comfort features as well. The company shifted its focus to the Terrano and more recently the Datsun Go, but the sedan has finally received an update. The biggest change is the new face, gone is the more rounded headlamp and in comes a sharp and larger unit following the boomerang design theme seen in various other Nissan models internationally. The increase in size makes it look out of place from most angles. The boxy grille has grown downwards and mimics the styling seen in the more premium Altima/Teana models. The fog lamp inserts even feature chrome garnishing while a chrome lip is also present in the top XV variant. There is an abundance of chrome but it actually adds a bit of elegance and presence since it contrasts well –  especially if the Sunny is of a darker shade like the new Nightshade you see here. The sides are more or less the same, the fender design has been cleverly integrated into the new bumper and headlamp. The only additions being new Y-shaped alloy wheels that look unique and the window sealers that now get chrome detailing. The rear end is also different, the new bumper flows with the existing shoulder line and protrudes outward like a skirt. The rear garnish is larger while the antenna has now moved to the rear end of the roof. Parking sensors also make it to the top variant while the tail lamps are same as before.

Inside, the centre console is a new piano black finished unit seen in the updated Micra while the gear knob is slightly different. The steering wheel is new, the three-spoke unit follows a triangular design and even features audio and phone controls, the buttons are very well detailed and work well. The instrument cluster is now backlit in white light. While fit and finish is impressive, the cabin is still plasticky. In terms of space, the Sunny continues to offers plenty of it as before, especially for the rear passengers. Driving around the Andamans is a unique experience, the roads here are twisty, narrow and quite involving. The Sunny may be unusually longer than competition but still grips quite well and the long wheelbase doesn’t really affect dynamics that much. The ride isn’t the best we’ve come across in this segment but it’s still quite good and absorbs undulations and broken surfaces. Nissan claims that the NVH and the ride have been improved too.

The HR15 petrol and K9K diesel engines have been retained but the latter gets reworked mapping for better performance as well as efficiency. We however didn’t find that much of a difference. The 1.5-litre petrol is offered in both five-speed manual and CVT variants and produces 99PS at 6000rpm and 101PS at 5600rpm respectively. The diesel meanwhile can only be opted with the the manual box, max power being 86PS available at 3750rpm. The petrol motor is a peppy unit and ideal for driving in town. The diesel motor on the other hand offers good low end torque but one needs to shift gears quite often to stay in the power band. Gear shifts could have been smoother and more precise. ARAI figures for the petrol CVT is a claimed 17.97kmpl, making it 1.02kmpl more economical than the manual variant, the diesel now returns a slightly higher 22.71kmpl.
2014 Nissan Sunny (11)
The Sunny will be available in eight variants namely – XE, XE D, XL, XL CVT, XL D, XV D, XV premium pack 1 and XV premium pack 2. All variants offer ABS + EBD and driver airbag as standard while only the XV variants get an additional passenger airbag as well, the XV premium pack 2 even features side airbags and leather seats. Prices are expected to be similar to the outgoing model while the new premium pack variant is expected to cost Rs 30000 more.

The steering wheel is new and leather wrapped and has functions for Bluetooth
Overall, the new Sunny is more a facelift model with the addition of a few extra comfort features, the diesel motor efficiency and performance is claimed to have improved but only slightly and it is barely noticeable. However this update is the right way forward for Nissan, we think the new Sunny is a good alternative to the compact sedans that seem to be doing so well in the country today.

Ford showed off an updated Fiesta at the expo with new looks and features. We spent a day behind the wheel of the 2014 Ford Fiesta. Read on to check what’s new.

Looks

2014 Ford Fiesta (2)
Out goes the old grille and in comes in a very Aston Martin like front fascia
The new Ford Fiesta in India subscribes to the global look that the American company will like to call as ‘Kinetic 2.0’. Out goes the old grille and in comes in a very Aston Martin like front fascia. There are oodles of chrome on the hexagonal grille. The headlamps have been moved to the top now while the fog lamps are also larger with bezels around them. The bumpers and bonnet are also new. Ford hasn’t changed the side profile though you do get new 15-inch alloy wheels, which look nice though feel more like an aftermarket unit. The tail lamps also are longer now.

The new Fiesta gets updates to the Sync system, similar to the one in the EcoSport.
The cabin of the new Fiesta isn’t a big departure from the outgoing car. What’s new is the ice blue illumination for the instrument panel, soft touch plastics and contrasting beige fabric for the seats. The front seats remain as supportive as before but they get scoops at the back to improve knee room for the rear passengers. Ford claims that the repositioned rear head rests increase comfort. This doesn’t change the fact that the Fiesta doesn’t have one of the most comfortable rear seats in the category. The boot space is as accommodating as most C-segment sedans with 430 litres on offer.

Features

2014 Ford Fiesta (8)
On the move, the diesel engine displays an urgency to rev and turbo lag is under control
What the new Fiesta gets is updates to the Sync system, similar to the one in the EcoSport. It now comes with AppLink which lets your smartphone display some apps onto the car’s infotainment system. Like in the EcoSport, it will read out your messages, dial and answer calls for you as also find you the nearest restaurant or even temple (data connection required). In the unfortunate case of an accident, Sync will contact emergency services through the Emergency Assistance feature. There is also automatic climate control on offer. You also get automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, rear parking sensors and cruise control. Ford has also made a driver airbag as also ABS with EBD standard across trims (there are three trims). Apart from the base Ambiente trim, both the Trend and Titanium variants get passenger airbag as well.

Engine

2014 Ford Fiesta (1)
This Ford continues to be a joy on the twisties
Ford has tweaked the 1.5-litre diesel motor to make an additional 1PS for a total 91PS while torque remains the same 204Nm. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Ford now claims 25.01kmpl fuel efficiency from the Fiesta diesel, second only to the Honda City’s 25.8kmpl. Ford has done it by reducing the drag through aerodynamic improvements to the body work. On the move, the diesel engine displays an urgency to rev and turbo lag is under control. The independent McPherson strut front and semi independent rear remain unchanged as well. This Ford continues to be a joy on the twisties. The ride quality, while not the best, is far from unpleasant. The recalibrated steering feels great to use, nimble at low speeds while weighing up nicely at high speeds. Ford claims to have reduced the NVH levels inside the cabin. However on the go, there still is a fair bit of noise creeping into the cabin.
If you are looking for a petrol engine or even an automatic, then you are going to be disappointed. Ford has discontinued the 1.5l petrol engine and the PowerShift transmission in this new car. The 2014 Fiesta can only be ordered in diesel and in six colours.
Ford will be launching the car on June 19. The American company says that they have learnt their lesson with the second-gen Fiesta and will be pricing the 2014 edition very competitively. Also, the company is very clear on this being a niche product and they aren’t looking at directly taking on established rivals like the new Honda City or Hyundai Verna. Expect Ford to price the Fiesta between Rs 7.5 to Rs 9 lakh, ex-showroom.

2014 Volvo S60 D4 India first drive

The first S60 that I drove was the fabulous petrol-engined T6 and I absolutely loved it. But that had more to do with the fact that I had 305PS to play with on the brand new BIC than anything else. When I later had a chance to drive the more sedate D3 it still impressed with a torquey diesel engine and striking good looks. Today the D3 is no longer with us and we have the Volvo S60 D4.
The S60 was always quite the looker in a rugged sort of way and it is easily distinguished from the competition. While the old car still looks appealing, that could also be due to the fact that we see so few of them on the roads that it’s still a fresh design in our minds. The face lift brings a new bonnet with two neat ribs that now bend towards the A pillar. The headlamps are now one single unit on each side of the car, compared to the outgoing design which featured a set of separate vertical LED units on either side of the grill. The grill itself is the same but features a slightly larger logo in the centre. The front bumper is an all new design and now houses the great looking horizontal LEDs. Overall the face now looks like it has been polished but also loses some of its rugged charm.

At one point of time you had three engine options(D3, D5 and T6 ) for the S60 but that has now been reduced to just two diesels – the D4, which we drove and the D5 which is a higher output version of the same five cylinder engine. The brilliant T6 petrol has seen very few sales over the years failing to capture the hearts of the adrenalin junkies in the country and so has been axed from the lineup. The D3 diesel has now been re-badged as the D4. The 1984cc mill makes 165PS at 3500rpm and 400Nm of torque between 1500 and 2750rpm. It loves to cruise at a relaxed pace and the set up of the gearbox also encourages you to drive smoothly. Launching it from a stand still will have you frustrated as it picks up slowly but that’s more to do with the tuning of the gearbox in favour of a smooth getaway rather than a lack of spur from the engine and is the reason for the sluggish 0-100kmph sprint timing. It’s a refined mill too and for a diesel, has quite a pleasing note to it when run hard.

While the engine encourages you to be smooth and gentle with it, the handling edges you to push to the limit. The suspension is set to the sporty side of firm and the weighty steering gives you a decent amount of feedback. With power going to the front wheels instantly, there is a fair amount of torque steer every time you floor the pedal. This is at the expense of comfort though and the ride is stiff and juddery. On smooth roads this car is brilliant but over long, rough patches it can get uncomfortable forcing you to reduce your pace considerably.
With just a face lift and a change of badging, the S60 D4 was never going to set the entry level luxury market on fire. The new look may be not be as extreme as the outgoing model but is still radical enough to appeal to those who like to stand out. With the number of heads we turned while we tested it, we can’t disagree with that rationale.
